The Island of Ireland is steeped in history and culture. Here at ATS, we’ve had the immense pleasure of partnering with three of the nation’s most prominent sites - Glasnevin Cemetery, the National Gallery of Ireland, and the National Museum of Ireland - to launch ambitious new digital interpretation projects. These efforts haven’t just introduced new technology; they have transformed the way visitors connect with Irish heritage, making history more personal, accessible, and engaging than ever before.
Glasnevin Cemetery: Bringing 1.5 Million Stories to Life
Glasnevin Cemetery is more than a burial ground; it’s a Victorian archive holding the faithfully preserved stories of over 1.5 million people. From poets and presidents to singers and suffragettes, the site is a microcosm of the nation’s past. The challenge was simple: how to provide historical context and these deeply personal stories when human-led tours weren’t available?
Our solution was a comprehensive, 45-minute multimedia guide. Delivered with images and archive video, the guide offers a vital layer of interpretation. The content was uniquely authentic, as the Glasnevin team created their own script and recorded the audio with their staff.
Critically, to ensure global reach, the guide was made available in six languages: English, Irish (Gaelic), Italian, French, Spanish, and German. The ultimate goal was achieved: the guide is a seamless journey through Ireland’s history, told through the lives of those who shaped it.
National Gallery of Ireland: Focusing on Picasso’s Genius
The National Gallery of Ireland’s temporary exhibitions require focused, creative interpretation. For their recent Picasso exhibition, the Gallery sought an audio tour to guide visitors around key parts of the display, focusing on highlights and providing deep insight into Picasso’s work and complex life.
We delivered a succinct, 30-minute audio guide. The tour was structured in five chapters, with each stop featuring one central work for discussion.
To ensure accessibility, the tour was delivered as a Progressive Web Application (PWA), allowing visitors to access it instantly on their own devices without needing an app download. The tour is available in both Irish (Gaelic) and English. ATS handled the design and build of the interface, perfectly matching the Gallery’s branding.
National Museum of Ireland: Multi-Tour Accessibility
The National Museum of Ireland sought to add a crucial layer of interpretation to its exhibitions. Practical site constraints were a major factor; limited space for equipment storage and staff time meant a physical device solution was unfeasible.
The museum chose a Progressive Web Application (PWA) as the ideal medium. This choice offered easy access for visitors using their own devices while eliminating the need for on-site equipment management.
ATS collaborated with the Museum to launch three separate audio tours, each running between 30 and 40 minutes, covering different exhibition areas. By offering these tours in both English and Irish (Gaelic), we ensured the content was culturally resonant and broadly accessible.
These three projects highlight a growing trend among Irish cultural institutions: leveraging accessible, high-quality digital tools, particularly PWAs and multilingual content, to tell their essential national stories more effectively.
