Creating a Virtual Museum: Survitec at 100

Published: 9 Oct 2023

We love a challenge at ATS. So, when global safety equipment firm Survitec asked us to create a virtual museum to celebrate their 100th anniversary, we jumped at the chance.

Survitec are marking their centenary year under the theme of ‘A Century of Being Buoyant in Survival’ and they wanted to create a microsite (accessible on all platforms) that shared the story of the lifesaving products they’ve created and to demonstrate their effectiveness when it mattered most.

ATS worked closely with their team to develop a dynamic and user-friendly interface that allow users to freely navigate through the carefully curated selection of archive images and video. We then blended their archive content and modern-day footage using motion graphics and added an audio soundscape to create an intuitive and engaging experience.

Survitec have a very strong brand, this needed to be present throughout the site without detracting from the stories we wanted to tell. Orange is a major part of their brand identity and this colour was used carefully through the user interface, illustrations and the videos. The animation effect and design of the webpage brings their history to life and created a perfect setting for the personal stories of the key people in Survitec’s history: the survivors.

The design of the user interface had to be simple so as not to detract from the narrative, it also had to be accessible and suitable for use on tablets and mobiles.  We wanted to make the most of the fantastic historic adverts and felt these really needed to sit at the forefront of the page. A number of key survival objects were illustrated in the style of the archive adverts, these were placed on top of the corresponding black and white archive image from the original advert, when the user hovered their cursor over the illustration the archive image was revealed. The illustration also acted as the hotspot where the user could access the video content.

“Thank you everyone at ATS for all of your great work, great team, pleasure working with you all!”  – Hannah Burywood – Head of Marketing Survitec
